
Johannesburg – Eastern Cape police shot dead one man and arrested four others believed to be responsible for a spate of violent house robberies in Mthatha, a spokesperson said.Three people were assaulted with an iron rod and axe in five different house robberies in Southernwood, Mthatha on Sunday, said Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela.Police on patrol in the area on Monday night spotted a group of men in a vehicle who sped off when they saw the law enforcement officials.

Johannesburg – A 26-year-old Eskom security guard was shot dead at the power station’s Polokwane plant, Limpopo police said on Monday.Captain Mohlaka Mashiane said the victim and another security guard were on duty at the Polokwane Matlala Road power station on Sunday when they were confronted by two armed men.”The suspects instructed the guards to hand over their weapons and proceeded to search one guard,” said Mashiane. -

Johannesburg – Ten people have died and eight others seriously injured in a taxi accident in the Eastern Cape, the province’s health department said on Saturday.The minibus is believed to have driven off a cliff at the Tutor Ndamase Pass between Libode and Port St Johns.”According to eye witnesses, the taxi hit a car from behind, overturned and veered off the road,” said Eastern Cape health spokesman, Sizwe Kupelo.”I have never seen anything like this in my life, there are bodies scattered everywhere.

Durban – KwaZulu-Natal doctors returned to work on Friday morning after downing tools for almost two weeks demanding better pay and improved working conditions.“We have made a call for the doctors to return to work. We have been told that they are resuming their duties and we will get reports from different hospitals before the end of today [Friday].”The reports will tell us whether all of them have returned,” said KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo.The MEC on Friday morning called on all striking doctors, including around 300 fired doctors, to return to work.Striking doctors agreed to suspend the strike on Thursday after Congress of SA Trade Unions president Sdumo Dlamini promised to make sure fired doctors would be re-instated.

Johannesburg – A 35-year-old father of two toddlers will appear in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday after he allegedly shot and killed a boy he believed was an intruder.The boy’s grandmother, Elizabeth Ramolefe, 56, told several newspapers in reports on Thursday that she blamed herself for the incident.Ramolefe’s grandson, Kgopotse, 11, had arrived in Parkmore, Sandton from Polokwane to visit his grandmother during the school holidays.On Tuesday night, he started screaming, “Granny come quickly”, and Ramolefe immediately ran to warn her employer, considering that there had been several break-ins at the house recently.

Pretoria – A gardener was arrested in Lyttleton on Wednesday morning after he allegedly attacked his 64-year-old employer with a garden fork, Pretoria police said.The victim is believed to be Unisa criminologist Professor Anna van der Hoven, 64 “He summoned the woman (van der Hoven) home at 08:30, saying he wanted her to see something. On arrival at her home, the woman was struck with a garden fork on the head,” spokesperson Evelyn Hardaker said.When the elderly woman fell to the ground, the gardener allegedly “climbed on top of her and continued hitting her”, she said. -

Johannesburg – A 37-year-old man suspected of raping seven woman was arrested in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.”His modus operandi was to drive along the N12, R28 and R500 roads offering women hitch-hikers a lift in a silver-blue Mazda sedan,” Constable Busi Monoe said.The man would then stop the car, claiming that there was something wrong with it. “He would remove the rear licence plates of his car and then proceed driving.” -
